Reading and Writing Grades 5 & 6 January-February:
We are working on a new nonfiction unit entitled: Researching to Build Knowledge and Teaching Others. Specifically, Biodiversity in Rainforests of the Western Hemisphere. Thus far we have been reading an interview and article about two specific rainforests and animals that live there. We are working on summarizing specific material, synthesizing information, and discussing amongst our peers specific information about each rainforest.
Reading and Writing Grades 7 & 8 January- February:
Our unit is Working with Evidence: Taking a Stand
Thus far we have read a letter written to the House of Representatives by Shirley Chisolm, Women's Rights. Sojourner Truth's, Ain't I a Woman? and Lyndon B Johnson's speech about The Great Society. We have been analyzing the text structures, writing summaries and leading group discussions about the what the author is communicating.
Next week we begin reading the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.
